Gospel Transparency

We tend to think of the hypocrite as someone who wants to be seen as someone other than what he really is. Biblically, the word means to wear a mask, and it was used of Greco-Roman play actors. They would quickly change masks in the middle of scenes, often having conversations with themselves as two different characters on stage at the same time.

Paul’s point of contention with Peter in our text is that he was behaving like someone he was not. And in that way, like an actor he put on a mask. He was not a Judaizer, nor was he a legalist. But he put on a mask of law that covered up his true identity in grace.
