The bluntness of Galatians 3:1 is softened in translation. Commentator J.B. Phillips captures it with his interpretation: “Oh you dear idiots of Galatia..."

It may sound harsh, but Paul was simply indignant at their lack of spiritual discernment. Charmed by the flattery of false teachers, they were being lured away by the empty promises of a distorted gospel. They were spellbound by false doctrine they should have instantly recognized as false teaching. Inextricably, they were falling back into legalism forgetting the gospel by which they had been saved. That is why Paul calls them gospel idiots.
