Gospel Futility
The question is asked in Galatians 4:9, now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?
The Apostle's concern is palpable. He asks, now that you are sons and daughter of God, why do you want to go back into slavery? Now that you are free adults through faith in Christ, why do you want to revert to your childhood servitude under the law? How could they so quickly forget their former bondage and so easily surrender their new freedom in Christ?
I am afraid, he lamented, I may have labored over you in vain. As Eugene Peterson translated verse 11 in The Message, “I am afraid that all my hard work among you has gone up in a puff of smoke!” His great concern was that the preaching of the gospel among them would end in futility.
