Our text in 1 Peter 4:1 - 6 reiterates a truth about us that appears often in scripture. Christian thinking is neither natural nor automatic. It requires the deliberate renunciation of the world and resistance to cultural conditioning. It requires intentional alignment and continuous realignment with scripture. It requires ongoing renewal by the Spirit.

We need it because suffering and hardship can catch us off guard. We can be taken unawares like Peter, James and John in the Garden, not knowing that we should be praying with Jesus because the hour of our testing has come upon us (Matthew 26:38 - 41). Therefore, we need to watch and pray. We need a ready mind.
