Why the Church Needs Creeds & Confessions Now More than Ever

There is a quiet crisis unfolding in the Western church. It does not announce itself with fanfare. It creeps in gradually, through small compromises, through biblical illiteracy, through a slow drift away from the foundations that have held the Christian faith together for two thousand years. And if recent surveys are any indication, the crisis is further along than many of us would like to admit.

According to the Ligonier State of Theology survey, only 53% of professing Christians correctly affirm that the Holy Spirit is a personal being rather than an impersonal force. Only 65% believe marriage is between one man and one woman. A significant portion believe that God accepts the worship of all religions. These are not fringe theological debates. These are the basics, the spiritual milk that Scripture assumes every believer has already digested. And yet, here we are.

So what do we do? The answer, it turns out, is not new. It is ancient. And it has worked before.

What Is a Creed, and Why Does It Matter?

A creed is a statement of the essential beliefs of the Christian faith, designed to be professed both individually and corporately. Historians point to one of the earliest Christian creeds as simply the declaration that Jesus is Lord, a statement that carried enormous weight in a Roman culture that demanded allegiance to Caesar. From the very beginning, believers understood that knowing what you believe, and being able to say it clearly, was not optional. It was survival.

The Apostles' Creed, dating at least to the second century, was used to instruct new converts and was recited at baptism. The Nicene Creed, solidified in 381 AD, was forged in response to the Arian heresy, which falsely taught that the Son was a created being rather than co-equal and co-eternal with the Father. These creeds were not invented to divide. They were crafted to unify the church around non-negotiable truth, and to guard the flock against those who would lead them astray with persuasive but unbiblical ideas.

This pattern, of the church gathering, wrestling with Scripture, and articulating truth in response to error, runs throughout the history of Christianity. It is not a human invention. It is a Spirit-led process of sanctification applied to the body of Christ as a whole.

The Reformation and the Confessions of Faith

By the sixteenth century, the church was in desperate need of that sanctifying work. Corruption had infiltrated its leadership at nearly every level. Church offices were bought and sold. Immorality among the clergy was open and largely unchallenged. Most devastatingly, the doctrine of salvation had been distorted beyond recognition, with grace reduced to a commodity that could be purchased through indulgences.

Into this environment stepped Martin Luther, who on October 31, 1517, nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Church. When called before Emperor Charles V and commanded to recant, Luther's response was unflinching. He declared that unless he was convinced by proof from Holy Scripture, he could not and would not retract anything. He was willing to die for that conviction, and many others who stood alongside him did exactly that.

The Reformers understood that the only remedy for a church untethered from truth was a return to Scripture alone, what they called Sola Scriptura. The Bible is the infallible word of God and therefore the supreme authority on every matter it addresses. That conviction became the bedrock upon which the great confessions of the Reformation were built, including the Westminster Confession of 1646 and the 1689 London Baptist Confession.

These documents were not the work of one man's opinion. They were the product of councils of hundreds of theologians who studied the Scriptures carefully and articulated the faith with precision. And they built catechisms alongside those confessions, series of questions and answers designed to teach doctrine to children and new believers alike. The goal was not tradition for tradition's sake. The goal was a church that knew what it believed and why, a church that could not be easily deceived.

The Scriptural Foundation

This approach to preserving and passing on the faith is not a product of church history alone. It is woven into the fabric of Scripture itself.

In Deuteronomy 6, Moses commands the Israelites to love God with all their heart, soul, and mind, and then immediately follows that command with an instruction to teach these truths diligently to their children, to speak of them at home and on the road, in the morning and at night. The Hebrew word translated as diligently carries the image of sharpening a sword, a repeated, intentional action performed over and over again. The Israelites were commanded to remember the Exodus, to retell it constantly, because memory of what God had done was the foundation of their ongoing faithfulness.

Are we not called to do the same? To preach the gospel to ourselves daily? To remember what we have been redeemed from and what we have been redeemed to?

The Apostle Paul, writing in 1 Corinthians 15, passes on what scholars widely recognize as a pre-Pauline creed, a statement of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ that predates even his own ministry. In 1 Timothy 3:16, he quotes another early creed describing Christ manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, proclaimed among the nations. The early church was a creed-reciting church because they understood that knowing the truth and being able to articulate it was essential to surviving in a hostile world.

Jude makes the urgency plain. He calls believers to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints, using a word in the Greek that carries the force of active combat. The faith must be fought for, not merely inherited.

The Call for This Generation

The situation we face today bears striking resemblance to both the early church and the Reformation era. Syncretism, the blending of Christian faith with the values and assumptions of surrounding culture, is everywhere. Biblical literacy is declining. And the stakes, measured in souls and in the witness of the church to a watching world, could not be higher.

The answer is not a new program or a more compelling worship experience. The answer is what it has always been. Return to Scripture. Know what you believe. Teach it to your children, diligently, repeatedly, in the small and mundane moments of daily life. The little things, accumulated over time, are what establish a person's faith and what have historically kept the next generation rooted in truth.

The creeds and confessions of the church are not relics. They are tools, forged in fire, handed down by men and women who paid dearly to preserve what you now hold freely. Pick them up. Use them. The faith is worth fighting for.
