Five Timeless Truths for Navigating Life's Journey

Parenting is hard. Leading is hard. Living faithfully in a complicated world is hard. The Bible doesn't shy away from this reality. When we turn to Scripture looking for perfect examples of parenting or leadership, we're often surprised by what we find—or don't find. The patriarchs struggled. The prophets faced challenges. Even the kings, despite their power and position, often failed in their homes.

Yet within this honest portrayal of human weakness, Scripture offers us something more valuable than perfect examples: timeless principles for how to think, how to live, and how to leave a legacy worth remembering.

The Company You Keep Shapes Who You Become

"Do not be deceived: bad company corrupts good morals" (1 Corinthians 15:33). These words carry a weight that many of us don't fully appreciate until we look back with the clarity of hindsight.

Our spiritual and moral formation happens through our closest relationships. The people we allow into our inner circle—those who see our hearts, our struggles, our unguarded moments—have an extraordinary influence on who we become. This isn't about betraying God's commandments in some dramatic fashion. It's subtler than that. The book of Proverbs presents moral compromise as a social dynamic, like casting your lot with a particular group of people and allowing them to form you.

We always think we can be the thermostat in the room, setting the temperature for others. But when surrounded by influences that pull us away from wisdom, we more often become the thermometer, simply reflecting what's around us.

Walking alongside the wise cultivates wisdom. Companionship with fools leads to harm. Association with people who struggle with anger teaches us to be angry, entangling us in their destructive patterns (Proverbs 22:24-25).

The circle of friends we choose matters more than we realize. This truth applies whether you're fifteen or seventy-five. The company you keep will affect you more than you understand right now.

Learning How to Think Matters More Than What to Think

The Bible tells us what to think about God, about ourselves, about sin and salvation. But Scripture functions as more than a prescription of what to think—it's a prescription for how to think. Truth restrains and guides our thinking, functioning as a foundation, a boundary, a guidepost.

Consider Deuteronomy 22:8: "When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house if anyone should fall from it."

Is God really concerned about the architectural details of ancient Israelite homes? Or is this a specific way of teaching a timeless principle—how to love your neighbor as yourself? When you think biblically, you realize this isn't about building codes. It's about being concerned for the safety of others when they're in your care. It's about loving your neighbor as you love yourself.

This is the power of discretion. Proverbs 3:21 tells us: "My son, do not lose sight of these; keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble."

The better we get at using discretion—taking what God says about Himself, about us, about the world, and applying those guideposts to our specific situations—the more blessed and peaceful life becomes. In a world where nobody seems to know what's true anymore, where information sources can't be trusted and division runs deep, knowing how to think is more important than knowing what to think.

God's Silence Isn't Approval

Psalm 50:19-21 presents a sobering reality: "You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son. These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you."

God's silence doesn't equal consent. His forbearance—His refusal to call sin into judgment immediately—isn't indicative of His indifference about what we've done or the outcome.

This exposes a dangerous error in our thinking: we assume God thinks about our sin the way we think about our sin. We create a comfortable God in our own image rather than worshiping the God who created us in His image.

This becomes a failure on two counts. First, it misunderstands the gospel. When we trust Christ, we die to sin. Our old self is buried with Jesus, and we're raised to newness of life. We're meant to walk in that newness, not continue in old patterns.

Second, it ignores the immutable law of sowing and reaping. "Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap" (Galatians 6:7). If we tell a lie and break trust, we reap the seeds of distrust. If we sow to the flesh, we reap corruption. If we sow to the Spirit, we reap eternal life.

Don't assume God's silence means approval. You will reap what you sow.

Abusing God's Gifts Enslaves You to Them

God has given us all things richly to enjoy. But gifts, when carried too far and abused, become weaknesses. What was once a blessing becomes a curse. What brought liberty becomes a taskmaster.

Psalm 104:14-15 says God "causes the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart."

Yet Ephesians 5:18 warns: "Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery."

The same gift God gives for gladness becomes debauchery when abused. This applies to wine, food, work, and even rest. The Sabbath was made for man—a gift of rest woven into creation's rhythm. But rest abused becomes sloth. "How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?" (Proverbs 6:9).

The marriage bed is honorable, but that same gift abused becomes a stumbling block into fornication. Work is a blessing, but work abused becomes an idol that destroys families.

If you abuse the gifts God gives you, they will enslave you.

Your True Legacy Is Faith

Everyone wants to be remembered. In our age of social media, everyone wants to be an influencer, to be recognized, to leave their mark. But Scripture presents a different path to being remembered.

Hebrews 11:13 summarizes the legacy of the faithful: "These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar."

Their confidence in God proved more enduring than any of their accomplishments. We remember them not because they were superheroes but because they were people like us who followed Jesus, endured hard things, did hard things—and did it all in faith.

Revelation 14:13 speaks of faithful martyrs: "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Blessed indeed, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!"

Their deeds still speak. Their legacy lives on. And God honors what they did. Jesus promises, "Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done" (Revelation 22:12).

God isn't unjust to overlook your work and the love you've shown for His name. No genuine act of faithfulness escapes His sight. No one who loves Him will be forgotten.

If you want to be remembered, if you want your memory honored, be the kind of person who can say in good conscience, "Follow me as I follow Christ." Walk the narrow way. Imitate the life of Jesus. Let people remember Jesus because of your influence.

That's a legacy worth leaving.
