The Stones We Forget to Build

There is a sobering piece of research that surfaces from time to time in conversations about communication and learning. Within one hour of hearing a spoken message, most people forget up to 90 percent of what was said. Let that land for a moment. Nine out of every ten things spoken into your ears during a lecture, a lesson, or a sermon will be gone before the next hour is out.

That is not just a curiosity. It is a diagnosis.

And if we are honest, the problem runs deeper than simple forgetfulness. It is not merely that we misplace information the way we misplace our keys. The real issue is something more deliberate, more spiritually dangerous. We are distracted, we are addicted to entertainment, and at our worst, we are negligent. We know what we should be thinking about, and we simply do not bother.

We live in an age that has trained us to consume rather than cultivate. Social media has shortened our attention spans to the width of a swipe. We have become so conditioned to novelty and stimulation that anything ordinary, anything that does not arrive with a certain wow factor, gets dismissed before it has a chance to take root. We gorge ourselves on Christian content, collect Christian things, and treat corporate worship like a concert experience, all while producing very little lasting fruit. We remember the insults from decades ago in vivid detail, but in moments of temptation, we forget who we are in Christ. We forget our baptism. We forget our covenant. We leave ourselves at the mercy of our emotions and react like children who have never been told the word consequence.

God knows this about us. He always has. And because He does, He does not leave us without a remedy.

His answer is disarmingly simple. He commands us to remember.

Throughout Scripture, the call to remember is not occasional. It is relentless. Jesus tells His disciples in John 15:20 to remember the words He had spoken to them. Paul writes to the Philippians that repeating the same things is not tedious but safe. He urges Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:8 to remember Jesus Christ above the chaos of ministry life. Jude calls his readers to remember the words of the apostles. In Revelation, Jesus frames remembrance as the very first act of genuine repentance, insisting that His people recall what they have received before they can return to it.

The pattern is unmistakable. God's people are a forgetful people, and God responds not with frustration but with faithful, persistent repetition.

The Old Testament gives us one of the most vivid pictures of this. In 1 Samuel 7, Israel finds itself in a desperate moment. The Philistines are assembling for battle, and the people are terrified. Samuel prays, and God answers with thunderous, immediate intervention. The enemy is thrown into confusion and defeated. In the aftermath, Samuel does something deliberate and instructive. He takes a stone, sets it up between Mizpah and Shen, and names it Ebenezer, meaning stone of help. His explanation is simple: until now, the Lord has helped us.

That stone was not decorative. It was functional. Every time someone passed it or looked at it, their senses were engaged and their memory was stirred. God showed up here. God delivered us here. Do not forget.

We need Ebenezer stones. We need places, practices, and rhythms that pull us back to the truth when our minds would rather wander.

The apostle Peter understood this urgency in a deeply personal way. Writing near the end of his life, aware that his death was approaching, he tells his readers in 2 Peter 1:12-15 that his intention is to keep reminding them of truths they already know and are already established in. He is not introducing new theology. He is doing something more essential. He is stirring them up by way of reminder.

Three things emerge from his words that are worth carrying with you.

The first is that repetition is not a sign of intellectual laziness. It is a spiritual necessity. There is no such thing as new truth. There is only a clearer understanding of the truth we already have. The Word of God is living and active, and the Holy Spirit applies its timeless realities to the ever-changing circumstances of our lives. But that application does not come without repeated exposure. We must return to the same well again and again. The gospel must be declared from the housetops not because it has changed, but because we are prone to forget it. Gathering together week after week to sing, pray, and hear the Word preached may feel ordinary. That is precisely the point. Faithfulness lives in the ordinary.

The second is that faithfulness matters more than perfection. Peter writes from a posture of urgency, not of having everything figured out. He is working with what he has, for as long as he has it. The same invitation stands for us. An imperfect daily rhythm of opening Scripture is worth more than a perfect plan you never begin. One honest conversation with your child about how God has worked in your life is worth more than the polished testimony you keep waiting to deliver. Do not let the pursuit of the ideal become the enemy of the faithful.

The third is that consistency is the goal, and it carries a generational weight. Peter's concern in verse 15 is that after his departure, his readers would still be able to recall these things. He is thinking beyond his own lifetime. Parents and grandparents carry this same responsibility. Your Ebenezer stones can become your children's stones. The stories of God's faithfulness in your life are not just your stories. They are inheritance. Tell them. Overshare. The risk of saying too much about the grace of God is not one worth worrying about.

It is never too early and never too late to begin building stones of remembrance. Start with what you have now, not what you wish you had. Be faithful and consistent, even imperfectly. The fruit will come. And long after you are gone, the people you loved and poured yourself into will still be able to recall these things.

That is not a small legacy. That is everything.
