Ongoing Concerns that Cannot Wait
From Sunday to Monday
There is a moment every Sunday afternoon when the worship fades, the fellowship ends, and the week begins. The coffee cups are put away, the parking lot empties, and the very ordinary rhythms of life resume. Monday arrives with its demands, its distractions, and its noise. The question that every serious believer must wrestle with is this: what travels with us from one day to the next? What do we carry out of the sanctuary and into the world?
The final verses of 2 Peter chapter 3 press directly into that question. They do not allow us to treat faith as a Sunday-only experience. Instead, they identify two ongoing concerns that require constant attention from every believer, every day, without exception. These are not suggestions for the spiritually ambitious. They are the marks of a church and a Christian who are serious about living faithfully in a world that is working against them.
The First Concern: Doctrinal Fidelity
The first ongoing concern is doctrinal fidelity, and it runs through the text in three distinct threads.
The first thread is faithfulness to the gospel itself. Peter urges his readers to count the patience of the Lord as salvation (2 Peter 3:15). It moves into the home, the workplace, the neighborhood, and the dinner table. Faithfulness to the gospel means we never develop one standard for ourselves and another for everyone else, expecting grace for our own failures while withholding it from those around us.
The second thread of doctrinal fidelity is a commitment to correct interpretation of Scripture. Peter references Paul's writings in these verses, calling him a beloved brother and equating his letters with the other scriptures. This is a remarkable statement. It establishes a chain of custody for the New Testament canon, confirming that the apostles understood their writings to be the inspired word of God, preserved and circulated among the churches as authoritative truth.
Peter also notes that some of Paul's writings are hard to understand, and that the ignorant and unstable twist them to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16). This is not a criticism of Paul. It is a warning about what happens when people approach deep theological waters without the anchor of sound interpretation. They lift statements out of context, misapply them, and bend them to support their own agendas. This is precisely what Satan did in the Garden of Eden and in the wilderness temptation of Christ, quoting Scripture while distorting its meaning. Correct, careful, faithful interpretation of God's word is not an academic exercise. It is a matter of spiritual survival.
The third thread is persistent discernment. Peter tells his readers to take care that they are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose their own stability (2 Peter 3:17). Three standards help guard against this. First, everything we hear must be measured against the written word of God. Second, it must be measured against the character of Jesus as revealed in Scripture, not a cultural or emotional version of him, but the Christ God describes in his word. Third, it must be measured against the fruit a person produces, because Jesus himself said that false teachers are known by what they yield (Matthew 7:20). When something fails these tests, the conclusion is simple. We stop giving it our attention.
Stability, in Peter's language, is not merely a passive state. It implies deep roots, firm footing, and fruitfulness. Psalm 1 paints the same picture: the person who delights in God's word and meditates on it day and night is like a tree planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in every season. Error is the categorical opposite. It is shallow roots, unstable ground, and a life that withers when the storms arrive.
The Second Concern: Progress in Sanctification
The second ongoing concern is growth, and it moves in three directions simultaneously.
We are called to grow in grace, which is our application of the gospel. Salvation is not a destination we reach and then stop moving. The Reformers understood this deeply, that the gospel must be preached daily to ourselves, that our application of it should be richer and deeper at the end of our lives than it was at the beginning. The Christian who has walked with God for decades should understand and embody grace more fully than they did on the day they first believed.
We are also called to grow in knowledge, which is our understanding of the gospel. The target is described in 1 Corinthians 13:12, that we will one day know even as we are known, that the mysteries of God's providence and the threads of his sovereign weaving through history will become clear. We press toward that day by deepening our understanding now, which also becomes a safeguard against deception. The more we know Christ, the harder it is to be fooled by a counterfeit.
Finally, we are called to grow in glory, which is our appreciation of the gospel. Peter closes his letter with a doxology: to him be glory both now and to the day of eternity (2 Peter 3:18). The word glory carries the weight of something immeasurably valuable, something that tips the scales. When we grow in grace and in knowledge, we arrive at one unavoidable conclusion. He is worthy of everything. All of it. Every moment of praise, every act of worship, every ordinary Monday lived in faithfulness to him.
Worship is not a Sunday event. It is a way of life. The work ethic brought to Monday morning is worship. The patience extended to a difficult colleague is worship. The integrity maintained when no one is watching is worship. Sunday transitions into Monday, and the concerns do not change. Neither does the One to whom all glory belongs.
