Doing Church God's Way

The Case for Multi-Generational Discipleship

What if the decline of faith in the next generation is not a mystery to be solved but a warning to be heeded? Consider this: according to a 2019 Barna Group report, 64 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 29 stop attending church after leaving home. A 2025 Pew Research study found that roughly one in five adults say they were raised as Christians but no longer identify with the faith. These are not abstract numbers. They represent real people, real families, and real communities where something went quietly and profoundly wrong.

The question worth sitting with is not simply what happened, but why. And perhaps more importantly, what does God's Word say about how the church is supposed to work in the first place?

The Primary Function of the Church

Before we can diagnose the problem, we need to revisit the purpose. The church exists to glorify God by making, maturing, and mobilizing disciples. That mission is not new. It flows directly from the Great Commission and the whole counsel of Scripture. But somewhere along the way, many churches began to drift from that foundation, shifting their focus from equipping believers to attracting outsiders, and from teaching sound doctrine to offering culturally tailored entertainment.

Proverbs 14:12 offers a sobering reminder that there is a way that seems right to a person, but its end leads to destruction. Good intentions, even passionate ones, do not guarantee biblical faithfulness. When the church begins building methods that are more comfortable than they are scriptural, the consequences tend to show up a generation later.

Sound Doctrine and Its Fruits

The book of Titus gives us a remarkably clear picture of what a healthy, ordered church looks like. Writing to Titus on the island of Crete, a culture Paul described as dishonest, self-indulgent, and morally corrupt, the Apostle Paul did not suggest a cultural strategy or a new outreach program. He gave Titus a straightforward charge: teach what accords with sound doctrine.

That phrase, accords with, is worth pausing on. Paul was not merely calling Titus to say the right things. He was calling him to connect biblical truth to practical life. This is the ancient distinction between orthodoxy, right belief, and orthopraxy, right practice. Sound doctrine is never meant to stay on the page. It is meant to transform the way we live, love, work, and worship.

The primary function of the church, then, is to teach the Word of God to God's covenant people. Not to perform for the curious, not to entertain the uncommitted, but to equip the saints. Ephesians 4:11-12 makes this unmistakably clear, describing how God gave pastors and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry. The pastor is not a one-man ministry team. He is a trainer, preparing the congregation to carry the mission into the world.

The Power of Multi-Generational Discipleship

This is where Titus 2 becomes especially instructive. After charging Titus to teach sound doctrine, Paul immediately turns to the congregation itself. Mature men are to be sober-minded, dignified, and steadfast in faith and love. Mature women are to be reverent, not given to gossip or worldly indulgence, and devoted to teaching what is good. And then comes the critical command: they are to train the younger generation.

This is not optional. It is not a program for those who feel called to it. It is the design of the church as God ordained it.

The word older in this passage carries the meaning of spiritual maturity, not just chronological age. The expectation is that those who have walked with Christ for years, who have been shaped by sound doctrine and have learned to apply it through seasons of struggle and growth, will pour that wisdom into those who are just beginning. Hebrews 6 puts it plainly: there comes a time to move past the milk of elementary teaching and into the solid food of mature faith. And that solid food is not meant to be consumed privately. It is meant to be shared.

The principle at work here is one God has woven into the fabric of creation itself. We learn by watching, we grow by imitating, and we deepen by repeating. Moses commanded the people in Deuteronomy 4 to make the things they had seen and heard known to their children and their children's children. Jesus himself modeled this pattern, spending years with his disciples before sending them out to do what they had watched him do. Paul did the same, spending years in Corinth and Ephesus, not simply preaching and moving on, but staying until the community was rooted.

Why This Matters for Your Church

The purpose of all this, as Paul states plainly in Titus 2:5, is that the word of God may not be reviled. When the church lives out the gospel it proclaims, when mature believers genuinely disciple younger ones and the fruit of sound doctrine is visible in everyday life, the watching world has nothing credible to say against it. The church becomes a testimony.

Contrast that with what Paul warned about in Titus 1:16, where he described those who profess to know God but deny him by their works. Profession without practice is not discipleship. It is a performance, and it does not hold up under the pressures of real life.

A Challenge Worth Accepting

If you are a mature believer, the question is direct: are you investing your faith in someone younger? Are you allowing the wisdom you have accumulated through years of walking with God to spill over into the life of someone who needs to see what faithfulness actually looks like?

And if you are a younger Christian, the question is equally direct: are you willing to be taught? Are you humble enough to sit with someone older, to ask questions, to receive correction, and to learn from their experience?

Multi-generational discipleship is not a clever church strategy. It is God's design for his people, tested across thousands of years of history. When we trust it, and do it his way, he is faithful to bless it.
