Why the Bible Still Stands
There is a question that has echoed through human history since the earliest pages of Scripture, a question first whispered in a garden by a serpent to a woman standing near a tree: "Did God really say?"
That question has never stopped being asked. It has simply been dressed in different clothing across different centuries. Sometimes it wears the robes of philosophy. Sometimes it carries the credentials of science. Sometimes it speaks from a pulpit. But the aim has always been the same: to cast doubt upon the reliability, the authority, and the truth of God's Word.
Understanding that this attack is ancient, deliberate, and strategic changes everything about how we read our Bibles today.
A Chain of Consequences
History is not a random collection of events. Ideas have consequences, and the consequences of undermining Scripture are written in blood across the centuries.
The French Enlightenment of the late 18th century devoted itself to logic and reason at the expense of divine revelation. It championed a naturalism that denied the miraculous and an agnosticism that questioned whether God could be known at all. What followed was not a golden age of human flourishing. Within a generation, 40,000 French citizens were executed during the Reign of Terror. The foundations had been shaken, and the structure above them collapsed.
The ripple did not stop there. Within another generation, Charles Darwin published his challenge to the creation account, eroding the understanding that human beings bear the image of God. Then Friedrich Nietzsche dismantled the concept of moral absolutes, insisting that there is no such thing as truly good or truly evil. And within another generation, Adolf Hitler wrote the political biography that gave rise to the Third Reich and the Holocaust.
This is not a stretch of logic. This is a chain of consequences. When the Word of God is undermined, human dignity erodes, moral foundations collapse, and suffering follows. We see the same chain continuing today in the confusion and moral chaos of our present moment.
The Psalmist asked the right question: "If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (Psalm 11:3). The answer, it turns out, is to return to the foundation itself.
What We Actually Hold in Our Hands
The apostle Peter, writing to a community of believers suffering under Roman persecution, understood the urgency of this question. In 2 Peter 1:16-21, he makes a case that is both historically grounded and spiritually vital. He insists that the message of Christ's power and coming kingdom is not a cleverly devised myth. It is not another fable dressed up in religious language. It is truth, attested by two irrefutable sources.
The first source is eyewitness testimony. Peter, James, and John were present on the Mount of Transfiguration when Jesus was glorified before them, when Moses and Elijah appeared, and when the voice of God the Father declared his pleasure in his Son. This was not secret knowledge whispered to a chosen few and impossible to verify. It was a real event, witnessed by real people, who could and did corroborate one another's testimony. It would have stood up in a court of law. And what it confirmed was staggering: everything the Old Testament prophets had said about the coming King and his kingdom was true.
The second source is the prophetic Word of Scripture itself. Peter describes it as a lamp shining in a dark place, a vivid image for anyone trying to navigate a world that has lost its moral bearings. But more than its practical usefulness, Peter draws our attention to its origin. No prophecy of Scripture, he explains, came from human imagination or human will. Men spoke as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21). The Bible does not find its source in the minds of men who lived thousands of years ago. It finds its source in the Spirit of God himself.
This is what theologians mean when they speak of inspiration and inerrancy. Every word is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). The personalities of the authors were preserved. The historical contexts were real. But the words themselves were guided by the Holy Spirit with such precision that what we hold in our hands today is exactly what God intended for us to have.
Three Things Worth Holding Onto
This truth carries three practical anchors for those of us living in a noisy, confusing, spiritually dangerous moment.
First, the Holy Spirit will never contradict himself. With so many voices competing for our attention, claiming spiritual authority and divine endorsement, this is a non-negotiable filter. The same Spirit who inspired the written Word will never lead anyone to act contrary to it. He will never point you toward something inconsistent with the character and nature of Christ as revealed in Scripture. If a message, a movement, or an impulse does not align with who Jesus is as shown in the Word, it is not from the Spirit of God. Full stop.
Second, God's Word can be trusted. When we understand how Scripture came to us, and when we see how consistently God has kept his promises throughout history, we are left with a firm foundation beneath our feet. When God describes the dangers of sin, he means it. When he describes the glories prepared for those who love him, he means that too. When Jesus says he is the only way to the Father (John 14:6), that is not one option among many. It is the truth.
Third, Christ is King, and he is coming. The transfiguration was not merely a mountaintop experience for three disciples. It was a preview, a partial fulfillment, a divine confirmation that the kingdom promised in the Old Testament is real, and that the King who will reign over it is Jesus Christ. He promised to return. The whole body of Old Testament prophecy points toward it. The New Testament confirms it. And God, who has never broken a promise, will keep this one.
The world may scoff. The voices of doubt will continue to ask, "Did God really say?" But for those who belong to Christ, the answer has not changed. He said it. He meant it. And he is coming.
