A Window into a Wanton Heart

As we continue our conversation about false teachers from 2 Peter 2, Peter does not specifically identify the false teachers by name, nor does he detail their doctrinal error. It is somewhat of a surprise because that is what both the Aposlte's Paul and John do. They name their adversaries and they name their errors (2 Timothy 2:17-18, 4:10, 14 & 3 John 9-10).

A I realize that is what we all want. We want someone to point to a false teacher and call them out by name and by sin. But Peter does not because the Spirit wants us to learn how to think rather than just learning what to think.  We are expected to employ our powers of discernment as we wrestle with the implications of the text.

So, instead Peter gives us a window into their wanton heart. Exposing the sinfulness of their character provides protection because it exposes their fruit. They deserve divine condemnation because of who they are. Their destructive heresies and their sensual lifestyles are symptoms of their character. 

Therefore, knowing what is inside of them and what compels them will help us avoid them. Join us today as look through the window into their wanton hearts.
